 It's time to play
============
Every mammal plays.
Lions... Tigers... Monkeys... Elephants... People...

It's when we play that we let go of all those ideas of who we "should" be... all that pressure... and just be who we really are.

And in my experience, there's nothing more profound in life than experiencing who you really are.

So, goof off with your kids! They're the best people in the world to goof off with ;-)

There is POWER in a happy thought

==============================
It's not easy though.

Our kids know that if someone is being unfriendly and using their words to say hurtful things that the problem is not with them but rather with the other child.

When we hear of these situations we simply tell our students to think of things that make them happy and feel good. Those are the things that really matter.

Not someone's words that are made up and false.

This is something that really needs to be practiced. Have your child think of 1-3 things that really bring them joy and have them practice thinking of it on command.

This will help them visualize something pleasant in a time when they may need it most. It's a good way to keep negativity out.

Make it a great day!

************************************
I created this from the "Know Bullying" App for Android and iPhone.

It's a very useful resource of age appropriate conversation starters to help you, the parent. Uncover things that may be going on at school and outside of the home with your child.

Please share and get this in front of as many eyes as possible.

Here's the link to the file: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jgF1AlAq-CmhGH3btQCSngyp-HiVwwxxWUzs6CZILVY/edit?usp=sharing

Is Social Media Ruining Your Child's Confidence?

12/6/2018

==================================
I never thought of it this way before until I saw an article about it the other day that really made me think.
A young girl (in her late teens) had mentioned that her Instagram just wasn't "interesting" and nobody seems to like her posts or follow her page. That she wasn't as beautiful as the those "other" girls.

At first I have to be honest, I thought, "Seriously? This is what young teens and young adults are dealing with these days? 1st world problems."

Then I read a book recently that mentioned more and more people are "outsourcing" their brains to their smart phone. More and more people are checking to see who has liked their post or who is their new follower.

See, this young girl had little self-confidence and seemed like little, if no, self-worth. This is a dangerous thing and could lead down a dark road of depression if not handled right.

After pondering this phenomenon for a while I realized this is literally no different than how advertisements make people feel about themselves, especially young girls.
Phrases like....
  • "I'm not pretty enough"
  • "I'm not skinny like her"
  • "I'm not beautiful like her"
  • "I'm not as cool as they are"
  • "I wish I had friends like that"

Are all too familiar and needs to be eradicated from the conversation young kids, teens, and adults are using on themselves.

So, what's the solution?

I have no idea. I can tell you that learning how to manage technology while living in this fast-moving technological time and instant access to information is vital.

Limiting your child's time on social media is start.

Helping them see their self-worth and getting them involved in their community is a great way for them to help others and disengage from their smartphones.

Simply, just getting out into the world and experiencing life is a move in the right direction.

It's a fact that social medial and smart devices are here to stay, but it's our responsibility to learn how to live it. It's our duty as parents and community leaders to help our children understand that it's just a tool and can be used for good, and to not take it too seriously.

There is a time a place for it.

The key is to learn to manage our connectivity to social media and technology.

I would highly recommend the book, Bored and Brilliant by Manoush Zomorodi.

I'd love to hear how you manage and teach your child or teen about social media? Please post in the comments below.

Attention Kingman Parents - Bullying PSA

==============================
Bullying is a problem everywhere and I for one am growing tired of the passive approach to this issue.
I discuss this topic often in our gym, but it's time for me to stop worrying about what our community will think of my stance on bullying.

We want our children to take responsibility for their actions, learn to be emphatic, to be compassionate, and practice kindness.

However, this does not mean they are weak.

We also teach them to protect their body's and to look out for those who are unable to protect themselves.

What does that mean exactly? Well it could mean for them to assert themselves in a way that would deescalate matters.

To not put themselves in a situation in the first place that would lead down something physical. To remove someone who needs help from a bully and get them someplace safe. To get an adult if one can be seen.
You know what else it means?

To use their skills as a martial artist, if need be, to neutralize and take control (physically) if need be.
We teach our students to not be victims, to walk with confidence, to help those who are unable to help themselves.

I have a zero tolerance for bullying of any kind from any age.
Here are our basic rules of engagement:
  • Rule #1 - Use your words with confidence and be assertive
  • Rule #2 - Remove yourself and tell an Adult
  • Rule #3 - Tell your parents IMMEDIATELY!
  • Rule #4 - If things get physical and you can't get away...use your skills responsibly.

In the end we teach them that nobody has the right to do anything to their body and they have every right to protect it.

Let mom and dad deal with the grown-up stuff...you protect your body. Your body is YOURS not anyone else's. If that means you must fight...then you fight.

Don't let your child become a victim.

It Takes A Village

We've all heard that saying, "It takes a village to raise a child."
What does that mean exactly?

I believe it to mean that the community has the responsibility to conduct themselves in such a manner that helps children learn and grow in an environment that is safe and productive.

As the "village elders" it's our duty to lead by example and to counsel when it's appropriate.
As a martial arts instructor this is exactly the position I find myself in.

We don't just teach self-defense, but we also teach life skills, manners, confidence, and more.
The goal being that we want them to be ambassadors for their community.

If you want to be a part of our "village" then get registered for our trial program.

I recently read a story from a mom who expressed her displeasure with her son sitting on the bench after many late-night practices.

It was obvious how frustrated she was and how sad her son was becoming.
Immediately I thought, "good thing we don’t have to worry about that in martial arts!"
Then I thought, "𝗘𝗫𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗟𝗬, we don't have to worry about that in martial arts!" There is no bench! Now, that doesn't mean that your child will win at everything but what it does mean is your child will have the chance to prove him or herself daily.

They will have the opportunity to challenge themselves and overcome their fears. They will become more confident right before your eyes.

I've seen it first hand and so have so many of our parents.

Childhood Obesity, A Growing Epidemic!

Childhood Obesity, A Growing Epidemic!

With childhood obesity & diabetes at an all-time high, it's never been more important to be careful with your child's diet.
The good news is, with the right information - it's easy!
I hope to provide you with a lot of that information over time. For now, here's a great tip to get started with...
=======
Say "NO!" to sugar & white flour!
=======
Sugar, white bread, white rice, white pasta, and everything with processed, white flour...leads DIRECTLY to bad health.
There's no way around it. I'd go into the science behind it, but it's a bunch of boring mumbo jumbo ;-)
=======
Eat THESE instead...
=======
  • Use whole wheat or whole grain bread
  • Use honey, agave nectar, or stevia extract for a healthy, delicious sweetener
  • Eat whole wheat pasta
  • Order whole wheat pizza
=======
These simple changes could protect your child's future.
=======
And let them live a long, healthy, happy life.
That's all for now!
